Master in sustainable energy systems is a two year program jointly offered by several European universities under the EIT label. The purpose of this program is to train students who will learn to make a real contribution to minimizing the environmental impact of current and future energy systems. Sustainable energy systems program delivers students with interdisciplinary skills, training and attributes required for a n career in sustainable energy sector.

Master in Sustainable Energy Systems description

During the first year, students can either study in Sweden or Spain at KTH: Royal Institute of Technology OR UPC: Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech. The curriculum in the first year offers courses and modules that focus on renewable energy, sustainable energy conversion, and methods for minimizing anthropogenic impact on the environment.
Following courses are offered to students pursuing their first year in the Master in sustainable energy systems:

Energy resources
Renewable energy technology
Energy storage systems
Microeconomics and energy markets
Sustainable energy and environment
Energy system analysis in environmental context
Energy efficiency and rational use of energy
Project in energy system analysis
During the second year, students chose a specialization track:
  • Combined Energy Systems at KTH: Royal Institute of Technology

Combined Energy Systems deals with multiple energy services from combinations of renewable energy sources (polygeneration and synthesis of complex renewable energy systems). Student work on combining multiple energy sources to produce various energy services in an efficient, cost effective and sustainable way. Courses at KTH include; green buildings, combustion theory, energy system economics modeling & sustainability indicators, energy policy planning, measurement techniques in energy technology, sustainable power generation, small scale polygeneration, advanced refreigeration and heat pumptechnology.
  • Energy Efficiency at PoliTo: Politecnico di Torino

Energy efficiency specialization helps students to understand new energy pathways in future complex-integrated systems, while focusing on residential and industrial efficiency. Courses in this specialization consist of; resources & environmental sustainability, power generation from energy sources, hydraulic & thermal machine testing, building physics & energy systems architecture, numerical design of thermal systems, polygeneration & advanced energy system.
  • Innovation in Energy Systems at TU/e: Eindhoven University of Technology

In this specialization module students learn innovation in electrical power supply systems, i.e. smart grids, storage of energy, built environmental design, socio-economic implications for developing countries, supply and demand in the context of real-life case studies. Courses include; energy, economy & society, heat & flow in microsystems, planing & operation of power systems, sustainable buildings, thermal energy storage, intelligent buildings, building performance & energy systems simulation, international development & sustainability, sustainability transitions and responsible innovation.
  • Offshore Energy Systems at IST: Instituto Superior Técnico

Offshore energy systems specialization focus on legal, economic, and ecological dynamics within the framework of energy technology implementation. Courses in Offshore energy systems include; hydropower, offshore wind energy, waste to energy, energy storage, wave energy, decision support models, energy services, PV solar energy, biofuels, solar thermal energy, electrochemistry and energy, hydromineral and geothermal resources, public policies for energy, technology based entrepreneurship, engineering economics, energy systems optimization, build environments and impacts.
  • Solar Systems at UPC: Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech

Solar systems draws upon solid scientific knowledge, while focusing on technological development in innovation and sustainability. Courses in this module consists of; energy resources, microeconmics & energy markets, renewable energy technology, sustainable energy & environment, energy system analysis in environmental context, energy conversion systems.
  • Sustainable Biomass Processing at Aalto University

At Aalto University students can learn specialized knowledge and gain expertise in sustainable energy production and conversion related to bioenergy. Courses include; energy markets, biofuels & bioenergy, plant biomass, electro chemical energy conversion, engineering thermodynamics, bioprocess technology, advanced energy solutions, molecular thermodynamics.
  • Sustainable Fuels Economy (SFE)  at AGH: University of Science and Technology

Students develop their strength in courses like; fuels chemistry, biotechnology, energy and environment, systems modeling, energy policy, modeling of fuels and energy systems.
Successful graduates will double degrees from the institutions they choose to study: Aalto: Master of Science (Technology), IST: Master in Energy Engineering and Management, PoliTo: Master of Science in Energy and Nuclear Engineering, KTH: Master of Science, TU/e: Master of Science in Sustainable Energy Technology, AGH: Master of Engineering, UPC: Master in Energy Engineering.
