Australian Postgraduate Awards are prestigious scholarships, funded by the federal Government to provide financial support to exceptional students.
The number of APA scholarships offered varies from year to year. In 2010, over 100 APA scholarships were awarded.

Eligibility details
You must:
- be studying a PhD, masters by research, or professional doctorate
- have a minimum first class honours or equivalent
- not have previously held an Australian Government-funded research scholarship
- be a domestic student (Australian citizen or permanent resident, or New Zealand citizen), or an international student awarded an International Postgraduate Research Scholarship.
What you receive
You'll receive:
- a scholarship, indexed annually ($22,860 in 2011). The scholarship is tax exempt, and is for living costs for up to 2 years for masters students and 3 years for PhD students
You can also apply for:
- a $1,520 relocation allowance (domestic students only)
- a $420 thesis allowance after submitting your thesis.
How to apply
Future students
Future students apply for admission to QUT during the Annual Scholarship Round. Indicate on your application for admission that you wish to be considered for a scholarship.The annual scholarship round closes in October each year.
Current students
Current research students apply during the Annual Scholarship Round via QUT Virtual.
What happens next
We will assess applications and make offers in December.
If your application is successful, you'll need to accept the offer within 3 weeks. We expect you to begin your research degree early in the following year.
Conditions
To keep your scholarship, you must:
- make satisfactory progress in your studies
- remain studying at QUT
- remain studying full-time, unless under exceptional circumstances. Exceptional circumstances include:
- caring responsibilities for a child
- caring responsibilities for school-aged children with limited access to outside support
- caring responsibilities for an invalid or disabled spouse, child, or parent
- a medical condition, supported by a medical certificate, which limits your ability to study full-time
You cant:
- hold another scholarship that is worth more than 75% of the Australian Postgraduate Award (APA).
Your scholarship will be tax-free if you're studying full-time. If you're studying part-time, your scholarship can be taxed.
