Overview
The American Research Institute in Turkey takes pleasure in inviting applications for two to four advanced fellowships made possible by support from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The fields of study cover all periods of history in the general range of the humanities and include humanistically oriented aspects of the social sciences, prehistory, history, art, archaeology, literature, and linguistics, as well as interdisciplinary aspects of cultural history. The fellowships for research in Turkey may be held for four to twelve continuous months during 2012-2013. Stipends in the range of $16,800 to $50,400 are available on the basis of individual proposals.
ELIGIBILITY: Scholars who have completed their formal training and plan to carry out research in Turkey may apply. They may be U.S. citizens or three-year residents of the U.S. Please consult ARIT headquarters on questions of eligibility. Advanced scholars may also apply for ARIT Fellowships in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
INSTITUTES: ARIT maintains two research institutes in Turkey. ARIT in Istanbul has a research library
concentrating on Byzantine and Ottoman Turkey. The ARIT Ankara center focuses on art, archaeology, and ancient history in its library, and serves Turkish and American archaeologists through its programs. Both institutes have residential facilities for fellows and provide general assistance as well as introductions to colleagues, institutions, and authorities in Turkey.

RESEARCH PERMISSION: ARIT fellowship applicants are responsible for obtaining the appropriate research permissions and visas. In general, researchers should seek permission to carry out research from the director(s) of the institution(s) where they intend to work; this includes researchers who wish to work in libraries housed in Turkish museums. For short-term research tenures some foreign scholars may enter Turkey on a tourist visa and apply for the research permit and visa from within Turkey; or scholars may choose to procure a research visa via the Turkish Embassy in advance of their arrival. Scholars wishing to carry out research in Turkey for terms longer than three months should apply for the research permit and in addition secure a research visa prior to entering Turkey. Non-U.S. researchers should consult the Turkish Consulate for specific procedures. Researchers who wish to work with collections housed in the Turkish archaeological museums, however, should make their applications through the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, General Directorate for Cultural Heritage and Museums. In addition, if the material they wish to work with is part of an excavation, researchers must submit a letter with their application that is signed by the excavation director giving permission to carry out the research.
